It wasn't easy for me to initially find the rhythm of Neil's film, and quite what was needed from the score. Perhaps it's because the film comes from 4 points of view- each of the main characters, and Neil's own. So it is at turns sympathetic, or finding fun in the way they relate to the America they are discovering. That they are somewhat at a loss with how to reconnect with the country in all its' normalcy seems to leave a kind
of vacuum, and it was important
that the music not fill it, which
was perhaps a little
counterintuitive for a
composer. Very rewarding
though.
