Dir: Alexander Payne

Alexander asked me to write a jazz score for Sideways, and played me some 1960's italian jazz as inspiration, and we got into figuring out what we wanted to do. Gradually the score took shape by me experimenting and Alexander giving me direction and critiquing the work. We spaced the recording days out several weeks apart so that we could try different techniques and ideas out and then assess what we wanted to do next. Greg Townley recorded into protools, but via a vintage valve based 1960s mixing board, Tony Blondal orchestrated, and Stephen Coleman conducted.

My thanks to Alexander who has become such a creative mentor, and to all the musicians that played on the score including, Ron Feuer (piano), Roger Burn (vibraphone), Pedro Eustache (flute), Dan Higgins (sax), Dan Savant (trumpet), Paul Morin and Dave Carpenter (bass), Alex Acuna, Luis Conte and Tiki Pasills (percussion) and the backbone and zest of it all; Will Kennedy (drums).
